female therapist new york

Cindy Koch, LCSW

Cindy’s schedule is currently full and she is not taking on new clients.

My journey as a therapist began in Rochester, NY, when I chose to attend a non-traditional public high school focused on creating an empowered, social justice curriculum. It was here that I began to understand the importance of community and connection. I carried this foundation as I moved from Rochester to Albuquerque and began to raise my family in a diverse, multicultural city. When family connections brought me back to upstate NY, I worked through my adjustment and personal history with a wonderful therapist who introduced me to trauma informed CBT and EMDR.

Seeing the possibilities of becoming a therapist and helping others, I returned to school and earned my MSW from Binghamton University in 2015 at the age of 51. Since 2015, I worked at an inpatient veteran’s program for trauma and addiction, an eating disorder clinic, and most recently a group practice seeing clients with a wide variety of issues from 5 to 80 years old.

My approach to therapy begins with creating a warm, supportive, and non-judgmental environment for our work together. As we build connection and trust, I adapt my therapeutic approach to the needs and goals of the client. Most importantly, my clients drive the bus, setting the pace and focus of treatment. I have training in CBT, DBT, Mindfulness, Art therapy, IFS and EMDR. My approach is trauma-informed, attachment based, and eclectic. I often utilize pieces of different modalities based on the issues at hand. I want the treatment approach to support greater understanding of your story and provide tools for growth. It is my hope that the therapy room can be both creative and data driven. I think there is a place and value in assessments. I’m also open to clients incorporating journaling, collage, poetry and other creative passions into their sessions. In 2023, I became a Level 2 IFS (Internal Family Systems) trained therapist. IFS is a systems approach that focuses on getting to know all of your “Parts”. We often say, “A part of me feels…”. This is the beginnings of Parts work. IFS seeks to increase self-knowledge and address emotional wounds. This work brings balance and enhances abilities to be “Self-Led.”

Outside of counseling I enjoy the water: kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkeling, and swimming as often as possible. When I can’t be in or near the water, I like reading, nature walks and photography.
